Solvent vs. aqueous inks The explosive growth of the large format aqueous inkjet market brought big, bold, vivid prints into the mainstream. Similar solvent based products followed later but not before aqueous inkjet had made huge inroads by capturing significant market and mind share due to high image quality, ease of use and relatively low cost for short run production. There was no disputing aqueous prints require a protective overlaminate to avoid smudging and smearing from handling or exposure to moisture. Users also realized that the prints would quickly fade in brightly lit installations unless more expensive UV-inhibiting laminates were applied. UV-inhibiting, pigmented inks were subsequently introduced to improve fade resistance but with the drawback of reducing the color gamut. What was really needed was a solvent based ink with excellent color gamut and media-bonding properties. Once dry, the inks would be outdoor durable without any need for extra lamination.
